Lesson at a Glance

Everything you need before the bell rings

Learning Objectives

Students will be able to…

  • ✓Understand an inverse function.
  • ✓Find an inverse algebraically.
  • ✓Swap input and output.
  • ✓See the reflection over y = x.
Essential Question

If a function turns 3 into 7, its inverse turns 7 back into 3. Every step gets undone in reverse. How do you find a function’s inverse — and what does it look like?

QUESTION 1
If f(x) = x + 8, what is f⁻¹(x)?
f⁻¹(x) = x − 8.
QUESTION 2
How do you find an inverse function algebraically?
Swap x and y, then solve for y.
QUESTION 3
The graph of a function and its inverse are reflections over which line?
The line y = x.

Going deeper? Verify by composition.

Have students verify that two functions are inverses by showing f(f⁻¹(x)) = x. A printable inverse-functions sheet is in the Math library.
