Everything you need before the bell rings

Learning Objectives

Students will be able to…

  • ✓Name common forms of energy.
  • ✓Identify an energy transformation.
  • ✓State the conservation of energy.
  • ✓Trace energy changes.
Essential Question

Energy is always on the move, becoming light, heat, motion, and sound. How does energy change form, and why does the total never run out?

1

Hook — A Phone Charging

5 min

You plug in a phone and later it plays music. Where did that energy come from and go?

👩‍🏫 Teacher Moves

  • Show a charging phone.
  • Ask where energy goes.
  • Set the goal.

🎒 Student Actions

  • Think.
  • Guess.
  • Get ready.
2

Use — Energy Check

12 min

Students answer questions about energy changes.

👩‍🏫 Teacher Moves

  • Send students to the Energy Check.

Standards Alignment

Built to the standards you report on

Aligned to the Next Generation Science Standards (Grade 8 / Middle School Science).

NGSS
MS-PS3-5

Construct, use, and present arguments to support the claim that when the kinetic energy of an object changes, energy is transferred to or from the object.

NGSS
MS-PS3-1

Construct and interpret graphical displays of data to describe the relationships of kinetic energy to the mass and speed of an object.

NGSS
MS-PS3-2

Develop a model to describe how the relative positions of objects store potential energy in a system.

CCSS
MP.2

Reason abstractly and quantitatively about energy in a system.

QUESTION 1
What is an energy transformation? Give one example.
A change of energy from one form to another, such as electrical energy becoming light and heat in a lamp.
QUESTION 2
What is the difference between kinetic and potential energy?
Kinetic energy is the energy of motion; potential energy is stored energy due to position or shape.
QUESTION 3
What does the law of conservation of energy state?
Energy cannot be created or destroyed; it only changes from one form to another.

Create: tell an energy story.

Have students pick an everyday event, list each energy transformation in the chain, and show that no energy is lost, only changed. A printable energy-transformations worksheet is in the Science library.
