Ninth graders learn the Tamil past tense (iranthakaalam) — the verb takes a past marker plus a personal ending: ponen (போனேன், I went), saappitten (சாப்பிட்டேன், I ate), paarthen (பார்த்தேன், I saw). The ending -en means “I.” Now they can narrate the past.
