Learning Objectives

Students will be able to…

  • ✓Describe the stages of a plant’s life cycle, from seed to flowering plant.
  • ✓Name the main plant parts — roots, stem, leaves, flower — and each one’s job.
  • ✓Explain what plants need to grow: sunlight, water, air, and nutrients.
  • ✓Use evidence to explain that a plant’s food comes mostly from air and water, not soil.
Essential Question

A seed the size of a crumb can grow into a plant taller than you. What does it need to grow — and where does all that “stuff” come from?

Grow a Plant

Slide from seed to full bloom and watch the plant develop. Have students record what appears at each stage and what the plant needs to reach the next one.

1

Engage — The Seed Mystery

5 min

Hold up a seed and a photo of a huge plant. How?

👩‍🏫 Teacher Moves

  • Show a real seed, then a photo of a large plant of the same kind.
  • Ask: “How did something this big come from something this small?”
  • Poll: does the plant’s “stuff” come from the soil, water, air, or sun?

🎒 Student Actions

  • Compare the seed to the grown plant.
  • Vote on where the plant’s mass comes from.
  • Record a first prediction to revisit later.
2

Explore — Grow a Plant

12 min

Students run the growth slider and track each stage.

👩‍🏫 Teacher Moves

  • Send groups to the Grow a Plant model above.
  • Ask them to name what appears at each stage.
  • Prompt: “What does the plant need to reach the next stage?”

🎒 Student Actions

  • Slide from seed to flower and sketch each stage.
  • List what the plant needs (water, light, air).
  • Label the parts that appear: roots, stem, leaves, flower.
3

Explain — Parts & Needs

12 min

Give each plant part its job and name what plants need.

👩‍🏫 Teacher Moves

  • Roots (water/anchor), stem (support/transport), leaves (make food), flower (seeds).
  • Name needs: sunlight, water, air (CO₂), and nutrients.
  • Reveal the big idea: mass comes mostly from air + water.

🎒 Student Actions

  • Match each part to its job.
  • Explain what a leaf does with sunlight.
  • Update their Engage prediction with evidence.
4

Elaborate — The Life Cycle

11 min

Connect one plant to the whole cycle and to food webs.

👩‍🏫 Teacher Moves

  • Trace the cycle: seed → plant → flower → new seeds.
  • Connect plants as the food that feeds other living things.
  • Ask: what happens without enough light or water?

🎒 Student Actions

  • Draw the plant life cycle as a loop.
  • Explain how a plant makes its own food.
  • Predict what a plant does with too little water.
5

Evaluate — Exit Ticket

5 min

Three quick checks on parts, needs, and the life cycle.

👩‍🏫 Teacher Moves

  • Hand out the exit ticket below.
  • Look for correct parts + the air/water idea.
  • Collect to plan tomorrow.

🎒 Student Actions

  • Name a plant part and its job.
  • List what plants need to grow.
  • Answer where a plant’s mass comes from.
Standards Alignment

Aligned to Next Generation Science Standards and Common Core literacy. State-standard crosswalks available on request.

NGSS
3-LS1-1

Develop models to describe that organisms have unique and diverse life cycles but all have birth, growth, reproduction, and death.

NGSS
5-LS1-1

Support an argument that plants get the materials they need for growth chiefly from air and water.

NGSS
4-LS1-1

Construct an argument that plants have internal and external structures that support survival and growth.

CCSS
W.4.2

Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas clearly.

Differentiation

One lesson, every learner

Multilingual Learners

ELL / EMERGING READERS
  • Real or picture cards labeling each plant part.
  • Sentence frame: “The ___ helps the plant by ___.”
  • Grow a bean in a clear cup for a concrete anchor.

Support & Access

IEP / 504
  • Pre-labeled plant diagram to complete.
  • Focus on two parts (roots and leaves) first.
  • Allow ordering life-cycle picture cards instead of writing.

Stretch & Extend

GIFTED / EARLY FINISHERS
  • Investigate how seeds travel (wind, water, animals).
  • Design a fair test: does light color change growth?
  • Compare a plant grown in the dark vs. the light.

QUESTION 1
Name two plant parts and tell what each one does.
Sample: Roots take in water and hold the plant in place; leaves make food from sunlight.
QUESTION 2
List three things a plant needs to grow.
Sunlight, water, air, and nutrients (any three).
QUESTION 3
A tree gains a lot of weight as it grows. Where does most of that come from?
Mostly from the air (carbon dioxide) and water — not from the soil. The plant builds its own food and body using sunlight.

Going deeper? Start a seed journal.

Plant beans in clear cups and have students measure and sketch growth every day for two weeks, recording water and light. A printable seed-journal page is in the Science library.
